I found this beautiful fabric in the thrift store. It was an XXL sack dress. For $5 I could never get this beautiful fabric so I snapped it up and figured I would find something I could do with it. So let’s Upcycle dress to a kaftan!
How to Refashion a Dress Into a Kaftan.
Sewing time around 60 – 120 minutes depending on your level of experience.
You will need:
Trim the sleeves to your desired length. I took mine halfway between the elbow and shoulder. I used the excess from the first sleeve to measure the length and angle of the second sleeve.
Watch the video at 1:53 for a visual guide.
Try the dress on and see what your desired length is. Make a mark with a fabric pen. Take it back to your sewing table and use a cutting mat, rotary cutter and ruler to get a nice straight line.
Measure your center point on the front of the dress. Place at least 3 center points on the top, middle, and bottom of the dress. Draw a straight line with your ruler connecting all three dots. Use your scissors to cut the centerline on the front of the dress.
You may need to remove some fabric on each of the front center seams to get a nice fit. Check out the video below at 2:26 for a visual guide.
Now that you have the outline of your kaftan its time to hem the sleeves, center seams and the bottom of the kaftan.
Voila, you are done!
