Want to upcyle like a pro? First you need to know what upcyling means. Just hold off on cleaning the house out before reading this article otherwise you might toss something you may later regret. Ready to get started? Let’s make some upcycling magick together!
What is upcycling?
Upcycling is the art of recreating a new purpose for something used. Upcycling is very popular in fashion, sewing and home decor crafts. I personally love to upcycle anything I can. It’s a great way to create a personal touch on a garment or piece of furniture.
If that’s not reason enough for you to upcycle, just realize you are doing the earth a favor by not throwing your used goods into landfills. In fact, the average American throws about 4.5 lbs of garbage out every day!
DIY Fashion Upcycling Projects
When I first began sewing I started with patterns and recreating clothes from the thrift store or pieces of clothing that I no longer used or wanted.
Here are a few fun projects for you to try with my how-to guide:
This is one of my very favorites refashion projects. I found this beautiful fabric in the thrift store although it was an XXL sack dress. For $5 I could never get this beautiful fabric so I snatched it up and figured I would find something I could do with it. So let’s Upcycle dress to a kaftan!
I have always loved a good shirt dress. Scrolling through Pinterest I was looking for some refashion ideas and I came across a color-blocked shirt dress. I thought I would try to upcycle two Men’s shirts to a dress.
Strolling through the thrift store I came along a beautiful denim shirt by Ralph Lauren. I thought it would be the perfect DIY shirt to dress project. It would make a perfect shirt dress but it’s a little too short! I like to use it with a slip or as a beach coverup.
