Hi, I’m Vanessa Barthelmes,
I am an author, aerial and flexibility instructor & a hobbyist seamstress. A down to earth laid back Australian girl living the Floridian dream.
This blog is a place where I share my insights and expertise in fitness, fashion, and wellbeing.
My journey into fitness came from experiencing sciatic pain and muscle seizures in my back. I began taking yoga classes in my lunch break to help elevate pain and align the spine.
From there I just fell in love with yoga. So much so that I decided to take my Yoga Teacher Training Certification. Part of our course was acro yoga. It was there my love for all things aerial came to life.
I’m a big believer that happiness and health are intrinsically connected, mind you, I have never been able to exercise just for the sake of exercise. It has to be something I love doing. Acro and aerial arts to me is a form of playing that brings me great happiness, laughter, and the bonus is, it’s great for my body. I hope to ingrain in my child’s life the importance of being happy and still being able to play as an adult.
After several years I progressed into an aerial instructor specializing in teaching aerial Lyra.

Starting ballet as a young girl of three I always had a good level of natural flexibility. That helped me when I transitioned into an aerial practice. With increased flexibility comes increased drama in your aerial poses. Naturally, I wanted to know everything about stretching and gaining flexibility in the body.
Fortunately, my yoga practice provided me with that background. I went on to train with leading contortion instructor Anya Shevelyuk. This helped me increase my dynamic flexibility which is imperative in aerial arts. Passive flexibility will only help with gravity is your friend. We all know that we are generally inverted so you need to have strength and flexibility.
My passion for flexibility lead me to write a book on Dynamic Flexibility. This is due to come out in 2020.
I further specialized in my flexibility training and knowledge by becoming a certified flexologist. I currently see clients in the studio in Jacksonville Florida and teach classes and lessons online.

My love of fashion has always be prevalent in my life. I remember going camping in heels and a cashmere sweater when I was 8.
Today my fashion style is a little different. In the church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, we have a modesty code that we need to follow. This became a challenge for me to find anything I liked or wanted to wear.
That’s how my sewing journey began. I wanted to make fashion forward modern pieces that fit my modesty code. This journey had me upcycling, embellishing and creating completely new pieces!
